She's free. She's wild. And she's fearless.
If she casts her eye in your direction, beware . . . and remember her words:
"Free was I born and free will I die!"
The world swirls around the sensuous gypsy, Carmen. Drawn magnetically to her, Don Jose is in way over his head. Mistaking her flirtation for true love, he forsakes everything--the young Micaela, his career, everything--for her. When she dances into the arms of the dashing toreador, his fury is unleashed. And Opera's bad girl isn't about to back down!
With its riotous opening, its pulsating rhythms and its powerhouse lineup of operatic hit tunes, Carmen gallops to its shocking conclusion.
Sung in French with projected English translations.

She's sweet. She's tender. She's gracious beyond belief.
Cinderella will steal your heart. And you won't mind one bit.
Love knows no class boundaries in this delightful romp. Forced into servitude by her jealous step-sisters, Cinderella falls in love with . . . well, you know the story. In the end, she finds it totally bewildering. There she is. At the Royal Ball. And on her Prince's arm. But does she banish her cruel family? Ah, she's far too nice for that, and besides . . . it's a fairy tale and everyone gets to live happily ever after.
Music to make you smile! Dazzling vocal fireworks. Voices soaring into astonishing ensembles. All at a spirited, sparkling pace that adds a quicksilver magic to this favorite tale.
Sung in Italian with projected English translations.

She's powerful. She's dependable. And she's smart.
She's the kind of woman you want at your side.
Machiavellian intrigue at its most riveting! With her husband deposed and assumed dead, Rodelinda wins at the high-stakes game of political intrigue by remaining faithful above all else. Fending off those who want the throne and those who want her, she deftly manages to save both her husband and the crown.
Handel's musical masterpiece brims with the richness, depth, and warmth we've come to know and love from Baroque music. A vocal showcase from the creator of the well-known "Messiah."
Sung in Italian with projected English translations.

She's passionate. She's trapped. And she's torn.
But with everything on the line, she's a woman who follows her heart.
No one should be put in her position! With war raging between their two countries, the Ethiopian slave, Aida, and the Egyptian princess, Amneris, both fall in love with the same Egyptian war hero. A slip of the heart and a slip of the tongue seal the fates of the beautiful Aida and her heroic Radames in this, opera's most explosive tale. When he's condemned to death, she slips into the dark crypt where they will be entombed together. Forever.
A huge orchestra and chorus bring Verdi's score thundering to life, delivering punch and pageantry to Opera's most spectacular work!
Sung in Italian with projected English translations.

Now an annual tradition in our 168-seat theater, you can easily add this intimate experience to your season package by checking appropriately on your renewal order form.

(Benjamin Britten)
Carmen, Cinderella, Rodelinda, Aida . . . and ALBERT???
(Forgive us for such a thematic deviation . . . but we just couldn't resist!)
And besides, Benjamin Britten's rollicking comic chamber opera actually is all about the search for a great woman-the perfect May Queen. Alas and alack however, in this rural English village, there's no fittingly chaste young woman to be found . . . at least according to Lady Billows who lords it over the entire town with an eye that is . . . how should we say? . . . myopically moralistic? For her the town is awash in immorality with nary a virgin to be found. Tsk. Tsk.
And thus the town throws off tradition and opts instead for a King of May. Amid giggles, catcalls and jibes of all kinds, our unlikely hero is crowned . . . and gets the chance at long last to escape from behind his mother's apron.
Albert Herring-a perfect piece for the Portland Opera Studio Theater!
Chamber operas offer riches to composers, performers and audiences alike. Things not possible on the Keller Auditorium mainstage become magical in our intimate theater setting. Lyricism, comedy, and unbounding energy characterize this modern classic and give each of our Studio Artists a real opportunity to shine.
